Volunteer Stream Monitoring: Macroinvertebrate Aquatic Insect Collection

Macroinvertebrate collection involves sampling and identifying insects like mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies that live in streams and rivers without backbones. This process helps assess water quality, as these organisms are sensitive to pollution and changes in their environment. By analyzing macroinvertebrate populations, we can gain valuable insights into the overall health of our waterways and identify areas that may need conservation efforts. Bi-annually, we partner with the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps) through a grant to conduct macroinvertebrate collections in Hickory Creek, furthering our understanding of this vital waterway and informing conservation initiatives.

Volunteer with Us!

We're looking for volunteers to help collect macroinvertebrates (aquatic insects) at designated stream locations in Hickory Creek. The quantity and variety of species discovered provide valuable insights into water quality and habitat conditions, helping us understand the overall health of our streams.
