Ways to Support Conservation
You’re always hearing about all the things we’re up to and programs or services we offer. But, have you ever wanted to know what you can do to help us? Conservation efforts always go further with more boots on the ground.
So…let’s dig in!
To start we have many events that could use your help as a volunteer. Think about the following queries and see if any sound like a fun match for your interests:
Want to lend a hand at one of our upcoming workshops?
Explore the education side of conservation
Help with setup or tear down
Assist with group projects as a project aid
Curious about our biannual macroinvertebrate collections?
Spend some time outdoors
Buddy up at a collection site
Learn how to collect water samples
Interested in pitching in at a native plant or tree sale?
Hang out with some plants
Help us setup for the event
Lend a hand loading up
How about joining us at the Hall Creek Restoration Project in Spring 2026?
Explore Ox creek in Berrien County that’s had invasive plants removed
Replenish the land by putting native plants back in the ground

Now, if you’re looking for something more involved we have two outstanding options:
With the commitment of a few individuals we can found a Friends of Berrien County Conservation District nonprofit. This organization would be able to fundraise independently, spearhead a millage campaign, and apply for grants only available to 501c3s. This bolsters our efforts to have more reach and access to funding for conservation projects in our community.
Join our board! For real, we need more locals 😀 In March of 2026 we will hold open elections at our Annual Meeting. You could run for a Director seat and be part of the elections for a four year term. If interested in running, contact the District Manager to begin nominations in January 2026. Alternatively, you can simply sign up to be an Associate Director for the board. Associates are able to contribute and participate in board meetings, but do not have the responsibility of voting.
Email our offices for more information on either option.
Last, and certainly not least, we have several options for those of you that want to help but can’t make any major commitments. Trust us, we get it. Here are a few low lift options:
Invasive species need you to report them! Seriously, these little nuisances can do a lot of harm without individuals like you keeping an eye out. Check out our Invasive Species page to learn about all the species you can be on the lookout for and how to report them.
Plant native trees and plants on your property, regardless of size. Even a tiny flowerbed or window box can make a huge difference for your local pollinators. We have several sales throughout the year, but we’re also happy to refer you to local options year round.
Talk to friends and neighbors about conservation efforts, what you’re already doing, maybe what they can do to help, and how to get in contact with us. Dialogue about conservation creates priceless community connections that we need to thrive.
Sound like a plan?
Thank you for everything you do 💚 If you want to get more involved, reach out! Or if you were reading along and thought of someone who might want to join our mission, please share this article and any other info about Berrien County Conservation District. Our doors are open!
